[ZION, IL] – Reflecting on a history of empowering people with intellectual/developmental disabilities (I/DD), NorthPointe Resources announced recently the year-long celebration of their 65th anniversary. While the organization plans to incorporate this milestone into all of their remaining 2018-2019 events and campaigns, the anniversary celebration will culminate at the NorthPointe’s annual summer fundraiser, dubbed this year as “Dancing Through the Decades.”
The event will feature a night of drinks, dancing, and food, as well as a raffle featuring a seven night, eight day 5 Star European Boutique River Cruise grand prize donated by Travel Center Inc. and Uniworld. Included in this cruise package are all meals, onboard beverages, accommodations, gratuities as well as shore excursions described on Uniworld’s website.
“The night will be about reflecting on the past as we sail toward the future,” said NorthPointe Development Manger Cheryl Dunlap “this is a special milestone for our organization, and it’s such an amazing opportunity to share our history with the community.”
In 1953 NorthPointe Founder Wayne Pollard, alongside a group of parents also reluctant to institutionalize their children with disabilities, established the first chartered educational and training program in Lake County. Over the years the organization has steadily expanded its services, offering a wide-range of programs emphasizing individual growth, skills training, and well-being and services focused on community involvement through employment, residency, and leisure activities. In the last year, NorthPointe also launched their micro-enterprise program, offering individuals with I/DD and/or mental illness the opportunity to start their own micro-businesses through the creation and sale of art, jewelry, and hydroponically-grown greens.
“Our organization was founded on the principle that everyone should be given the opportunity to live a fulfilling and meaningful life,” said NorthPointe CEO, “it is our responsibility to break down barriers and perceptions holding back the people we serve, and we are getting closer every day.”
In addition to their I/DD services, NorthPointe Resources began providing mental health services in 1998 as a result of a grant that offered vocational training to individuals in nursing homes struggling with mental health issues. In 2006, the services grew and comprehensive treatment programs were added as mental health support expanded in the state of Illinois. At this time, NorthPointe offers mental health services consisting of individual and group community support and therapy, as well as services for Youth and Young Adults.
Established in 1953, NorthPointe Resources is a premier provider of a full range of award-winning programs for people with disabilities and/or mental illness living in northern Illinois, supporting approximately 500 people annually. To learn more please visit www.northpointeresources.org.
