11th Annual NorthPointe Doug Cygan Golf Classic, August 28th, 2006
If you wanted to meet some of our greatest athletes, Glen Flora Country Club in Waukegan was the place to be on Monday, August 28th. Over 200 golfer enthusiasts including legendary football and hockey players joined in to help raise over $230,000 for capital improvements, which included internal and external maintenance and renovation of our residential homes and Killian Center.
The roster was dynamic – the Chicago Bears were represented by Dick Butkus, Richard Dent, Dave Duerson, Dan Hampton, Glen Kozlowski, Steve McMichael, Emery Moorehead, Tom Waddle, James “Big Cat” Williams, Otis Wilson and Chris Zorich. From the Hockey arenas attendees included Bobby Hull, Dennis Hull, Eddie Olczyk, Denis Savard. Time was spent trying to dodge raindrops on the golf course and athletes were kept busy signing autographs and playing golf - even the wet weather couldn’t dampen their willingness to help a very good cause.
Susan Thomas, Event Chairperson said with a laugh “This 11th annual event proved that there is a first time for everything; the first time in 11 years it rained and the first time we had a Hole-in-one winner! (Do you know that the odds of getting a hole-in-one for the average golfer is more than 8,000 to 1?)” Asked about the event, Colleen Babington, Executive Director of NorthPointe Resources said “Glen Flora is a great golf course and a great venue. It‘s the kind of live entertainment that creates lasting memories.” Doug Cygan, VP Grocery/GM Jewel Osco, believes that the success of this event is based on the fact that “many of the players come back year after year and feel that supporting this event is an excellent way to support all of the members of our community”.
